IMPLEMENTING AND SUPPORTING INTERNETWORKING SERVICES

A Training Workshop for Network Systems Operators
February 17 - 27, 1997 Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

This workshop was sponsored by the Management and Training Services Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat, and was organised by The Commonwealth Network of Information Technology for Development (COMNET-IT) and the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH)

Purpose of Workshop

The purpose of the workshop was to provide knowledge and develop competence in the field of advanced communication technologies, with specific reference to Inter-networking and LAN and WAN technologies. This is one of a series of related initiatives being developed by COSTECH and COMNET-IT in Tanzania consistent with the wider framework for the Africa Information Society Initiative (AISI) sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Objectives

  • To expose participants to the developments in telematics and how it could relate to developing strategies for exploiting some of the inherent benefits.
  • To provide a good understanding of the principles under-pinning advanced communication technologies , such as LANs, WANs and Internet/Intranets.
  • To develop the skills and competence of systems operators and network administrators in developing, building and managing LANs, WANs and Internet Web Sites.
  • To enable participants to develop confidence in using telecommunications tools such as, Email, ftp, WWW, HTML,
  • To provide practical experience in setting-up and establishing internal and international links.

Outcomes

  • Competence in building and configuring computer networks.
  • Expertise in developing, administering and maintaining Internet/Intranet sites.
  • Competence in writing Web pages for Intranet/Internet publication.
  • Appreciation and understanding of the significance of the role of the system operator.

The programme included a number of hands on exercises to reinforce the concepts covered in the course. Workshop participants received intructions in setting up, administering and maintaining local area network and Internet services on both UNIX and Windows NT platforms. The workshops were led by Mr Michael Smith and Mr Noel Gatt.

Mr. Henry Alamango, executive director of COMNET-IT, and Mr Theophilus Mlaki, Director for Information and Documentation at COSTECH, presented certificates to the participants. The following is a list of the participants and their institutional affiliations.
