OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop objectives were to:
- Promote a better
understanding of the millenium bug problem, the issues
and the implications for Government and society as a
whole;
- Sensitive Finance agencies
in Government as well as IT policy-makers to the key role
they hold in ensuring adequate provisioning within the
general allocation of national priorities;
- Provide guidelines on
high-level planning requirements as well as on where to
seek help;
- Formulate recommendations
for the attention of national Governments, and in
particular, Ministries of Finance
The
Commonwealth Network of Information Technology for Development
(COMNET-IT) is an
international foundation hosted by the Government of Malta and
also supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. It works
primarily within Commonwealth member countries to support
activities related to the development of capabilities in
implementing, managing and using new information and
communications technologies.
COMNET-IT is a network
organisation whose mission is to foster the building and
enhancing of institutional and human networks through the
mediation of computer communication networks. The organisation
facilitates the brokering and funding of projects, develops
Internet based services and undertakes capability building
through policy and training workshops.
The Government of Malta has
undertaken to provide the initial infrastructural and human
resources to support the establishment and functioning of the
Foundations Secretariat. The Commonwealth Secretariat,
through the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation (CTFC),
along with other donors, supports COMNET-IT sponsored programmes.
The National Centre for Software Technology in Bombay, India, and
the Malta Information Technology and Training Services Ltd serve
as sources of technology competence for the Foundation.
