REPORT ON THE COMNET-IT AND COMPUTER SOCIETY OF INDIA
WORKSHOP ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR BUILDING COMPETITIVE ENTERPRISES
The Workshop was attended by 18 participants including 4 participants from
India. A list of
participants is shown below. The following countries were represented:
Bangaladesh, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Sri Lanka,
Tanzania, U.K. and Uganda.
The Workshop participants attended two days of intensive classroom sessions
at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. These sessions were conducted
by the following IIMA faculty:
Profs. S.C. Bhatnagar, B.H. Jajoo, K.V.
Ramani, V. Venkata Rao, and T.P.Rama Rao.
On 12th and 13th the participants attended tutorials organised on the
following themes:
- TU101 Internet/Intranet, JAVA, and Distributed Computing
- TU102 Multimedia Applications for Enterprise Intranets: Planning and
Implementation
- TU103 GIS and its application in Resource Planning
- TU104 Data Warehousing and Data Mining
- TU201 The World Wide Web: Strategies and Opportunities for Business
- TU202 IT for Organizational Benefits
- TU203 Building Distributed Applications: Tools and Techniques
- TU204 Emerging Trends in LAN/WAN Data Communication Technologies
The bulk of the participants attended the tutorial TU 01 on the first day and
TU 201 on the second day.
The participants attended all the plenary sessions held in the Computer
Society of India 32nd Annual Convention on 13th morning, 14th morning and 16th
morning. A special session was held for the participants on 14th afternoon where
Mr. Anand Kumar Peter, Head of the IT Department of Times of India, the largest
Newspaper/media company in India made a presentation. The presentation was found
to be extremely useful. The participants found all the components of the
workshop to be very useful. The feedback on the two day workshop and the
tutorials was very positive. A special feature of the Convention was a plenary
panel titled "IT for Organisation Excellence: the Commonwealth Country
Experience". Four participants served as panelists in this session which was
attended by nearly 800 delegates. The presentation by the workshop participants
were received very well.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Jahar Saha, the Director of IIMA.
Dr.S. Ramani, NCST, President of CSI and Chairman of Comnet-IT handed
certificates of the participation in the concluding session organised on 15th
November 1997 afternoon. Besides the academic value addition to the
participants, the workshop generated a considerable interest in COMNET-IT. Write
up about the event was carried in all the major Newspapers published in India
through their editions from Ahmedabad. A write up was also carried in several
Newspapers published in the local language.
The contributions of the COMNET-IT and Commonwealth Secretariat were
acknowledged in the CSI Convention inauguration, conclusion and in other
sessions.
