Information and Communication Technologies in International Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development: A Commonwealth Perspective.

The Commonwealth Network of Information Technology (COMNET-IT), in
association with the Malta External Trade Corporation (METCO), held an
international workshop on 'Information and Communication Technologies in
International Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development: a Commonwealth
Perspective', in Malta on the 19th to 21st May, 1997
at the New Dolmen Hotel, Qawra, Malta. The event was sponsored by the
Management and Training Services Division (MTSD) of the Commonwealth Secretariat
and the Malta Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The workshop addressed an important aspect of the forthcoming Commonwealth
Heads of Government Meeting being held next October in Edinburgh, Scotland, the
theme being 'Trade, Investment and Sustainable Development: the Road to
Commonwealth Prosperity'. The Malta workshop provided an opportunity for
participants to gain insights, establish contacts and propose measures affecting
policy in this area.
Participants in this programme included policy makers in Government, Trade
Promotion Organisations and Trade Facilitation Bodies, including Chambers of
Commerce, as well as representatives of private industry.
The workshop was intended to:
- increase awareness of the opportunities, issues and initiatives involving
electronic media in Trade and Commerce
- address the policy implications arising from the transformations taking
place in this area
- propose initiatives that may be taken to facilitate the development of
information infrastructure both within the Commonwealth and beyond.
